Singapore : Minister for National Development, 2nd minster for finance to Singapore Mr. Lawrence wonge called a press Conference with Ministerial Taskforce announced a further step up in their measures against the Wuhan virus. aimed to minimise the risk of more imported cases, contain the identified cases and minimise the chances of the virus spreading within Singapore.
First, we have extended our travel advisory to defer all non-essential travel to the rest of China with immediate effect.
Second, we will enhance screening efforts at our air checkpoints. Thermal scanning will cover all incoming flights into Changi Airport. For flights from China, medical teams will be deployed at the aerobridge to identify passengers who look unwell (since fever may not be present for all cases). In addition, ICA officers will look out for those with China passports issued in Hubei (the numbers are already coming down due to China’s travel restrictions), ensure they are well, and get their contact details to facilitate any subsequent monitoring of their status.
Third, we will implement a 14-day Leave of Absence for students as well as adult workers returning from China, so that they can stay at home and minimise contact with others. We will do this for the education, healthcare and eldercare sectors where is close and sustained contact with vulnerable groups like children and the elderly. For other sectors, we strongly advise employers to keep a close watch over their returning workers and take appropriate precautions, depending on the nature of the work.
We will continue to monitor the rapidly evolving situation and implement additional measures as necessary. We have a comprehensive plan in place, and will adjust and recalibrate our actions as the situation evolves. We will be proactive. But let’s not be over-reactive, succumb to panic, or worse turn xenophobic. Let’s keep calm, take the necessary precautions and carry on with our lives. We have overcome many challenges before; we have defeated SARS; we can and will overcome this situation together.
